What Are Endocrine Disruptors?
You probably noticed that I mentioned endocrine disruptors above as something that lower testosterone. So I thought I’d give a quick overview of what they are, as it’s not a term I became aware of until I began my own research in to what lowers T.
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with how your hormonal/ endocrine system works. These disruptions can result in incorrect hormonal production & imbalance, including lowered testosterone production.

The issue doesn’t just end there though, these imbalances can potentially cause even more serious health issues. Such as, the development of cancerous tumours, birth defects & other developmental disorders. Any bodily systems that are controlled by hormones, can potentially be negatively impacted by endocrine disrupting chemicals.
So hopefully you now have a greater understanding of what endocrine disruptors are and the risks they can pose to your health. This is on top of them being chemicals that lower testosterone production. So now let’s take a look at the endocrine disruptors that are specifically found in mouthwash & other chemicals that lower testosterone in mouthwash.

Alcohol
The problem is alcohol lowers testosterone production when ingested. While I agree the amount of alcohol you’re likely to swallow from mouthwash in minimal. The issues with mouthwash don’t end there and as you’ll see below it isn’t a necessary ingredient.
Alcohol is a key ingredient of most mouthwashes due to the strong tingling sensation which people associate with cleanliness and the powerful antibacterial qualities. The issue is that the alcohol is so powerful it destroys the good bacteria as well.
The alcohol in mouthwash is also a known carcinogen and it’s believe that there is now sufficient evidence to show that mouthwashes that contain alcohol can contribute to the increased risk of developing oral cancer. So plenty of reasons to use natural alcohol-free mouthwash or an alternative like gargling salt water.
Fluoride
Studies demonstrate that continual high exposure to fluoride can badly damage the male reproductive system. This includes reducing testosterone production, sperm motility, sperm quality and overall fertility. In highly controlled studies it’s been consistently found that direct fluoride exposure to the testes or semen, inhibits testosterone production and damages sperm.
SLS
Sodium lauryl sulfate, which often appears as SLS, SLES or sulfates on ingredients lists. So if you see an ingredient with sulfate as part of the name remember to avoid! So SLS is a detergent, surfacant & emulsifier. It’s a key ingredient in thousands of products which includes cosmetics, hygiene, oral care and industrial cleaners. It’s often mistaken as being a healthy/ safe ingredient as it originates from coconuts.
However the manufacturing process that is gone through to create SLS that results in it becoming toxic. With it becoming toxic it’s a chemical that lowers testosterone and a danger to your endocrine system. SLS poses a threat to your testosterone production and wider endocrine system as it breaks down the moisture barrier of your skin.
This breakdown enables other toxic chemicals & substances (like the other we’ve listed) to penetrate the skin and makes it easier for other chemicals that lower testosterone to make their way in to the body. SLS breaks down the moisture barrier so greatly, it is believed to make the skin 100 times easier to permeate and penetrate.
The other key issue with SLS is, that when combined with other chemicals it becomes a “nitrosamine”. Nitrosamine is powerful carcinogen and is a toxin to the body. There have been studies conducted in to the effects of SLS exposure, these studies have found links to organ toxicity, skin & eye irritation. Reproductive & developmental toxicity and reduced testosterone production/ endocrine disruption.
Triclosan
Triclosan is an antibacterial chemical which helps to fight plaque and gingivitis; however this protection comes at a pretty high cost! Triclosan has been linked to issues with antibiotic resistance & our old friend/ recurring enemy endocrine disruption. As we’ve covered endocrine disruption can cause multiple health issues including lowering testosterone production.
Parabens
This chemical is used in wide range of skin, cosmetics and oral care products, including mouthwashes. You will see parabens make frequent appearances in my Chemicals That Lower Testosterone Articles Parabens are utilised as a preservative in products, the issue when it comes to lowering testosterone production is two fold. It mimics estrogen in the body, lowering your ratio of testosterone to estrogen.
Parabens are like most the other chemicals on this list are endocrine disruptors. Research ran by the US Environmental Protection Agency has linked methyl parabens to multiple health issues. This includes metabolic, hormonal, neurological and developmental disorders. Parabens don’t just negatively impact testosterone and the endocrine system but are also a risk to multiple areas of your health.

QUATS
Quarternary Ammonium Compounds, or Known as “quats” for short. Again they are a common ingredient cosmetic and oral care items of they are usually responsible for the “slippery feel” in liquids. They also have anti-microbial properties which is what has led to them being added to cleaning products and others like mouthwashes.
QUATS can cause multiple health issues, these include respiratory issues and skin irritation. What we are more interested in as far as being a chemical that lower testosterone is QUATS like benzalkonium chloride. This is a common ingredient in mouthwashes. It’s shown to be yet another endocrine disruptor.
Alternatives To Brands Containing Chemicals That Lower Testosterone
