As the title of this article series suggests, there are a number of “unusual” or unexpected things that lower testosterone levels and production. So the idea of this article series and this final piece is to make sure you aren’t getting caught out by these things and unwittingly causing your testosterone levels to drop.

If you’re reading this article, I’m hopeful that you already know how testosterone affects your health and the negative impact and wider risks associated with having low testosterone levels. Overdoing It In the Gym

Rest days are critical for testosterone production, over training is a common mistake made by many regular gym goers. man collapsedWhen your body goes in to a state of being over trained it negatively impacts on T production in a big way.

If you go in to a state of over training it can be months before your testosterone levels are restored to their natural levels.

Much the same way you want to make sure you include rest days as part of your training regime, you also want to make sure that you avoid doing a workout to complete failure! This can fatigue and put stress on muscles, this leads to the release of cortisol and cortisol inhibits the release of testosterone.

Eating Liquorice

When it comes to lowering testosterone, liquorice is actually a “double killer”! This is due to the high amounts of sugar & the fact it also inhibits the bodies’ ability to remove cortisol. As I’ve mentioned above; cortisol inhibits T production.

Continued Ibuprofen Use

Recently carried out research has shown that continued use of ibuprofen (in the region of 30 days plus) can lower your testosterone production. In fact a number of medications can lower T.

One particular popular medication shown to be one of the more prevalent things to lower testosterone is statins, this is a mediation you may have heard of perhaps used! I advise to check with your doctors first & check before starting courses of medication and getting advice whether they can lower T.

Chemical Air fresheners

Chemical air fresheners are very high in endocrine disruptors, these are chemicals that disrupt hormone production, this includes lowering testosterone production. They also cause a number of health issues, you can find out more about this, in the article below.

As we often use air fresheners in confined spaces this greatly increases the likelihood of inhaling these chemicals and also the concentration of the chemicals. So I suggest opting for organic options where possible!

Not cleaning/ hoovering

Research has shown that there are endocrine disrupting chemicals that accumulate in dirt & dust found in every room. So I Hooveradvise to make your “spring cleaning” a weekly thing if you want to keep your testosterone levels up!

Being exposed to light during Sleep

For ideal testosterone production you want to be getting 7 – 8 hours of quality sleep per night. Something that can disrupt your sleep is being exposed to light, so you want to be looking to cancel out as much light in whichever room you sleep in as much as possible. Black out curtains or sleeping masks are ideal for this!

Eating Peanut butter

This one may shock you, as peanut butter is the choice of snack of many gym regulars. The problem is that peanuts are legumes & as a result high in estrogen, while legumes may not actively lower testosterone, if increased T is your aim you don’t want to be increasing your estrogen levels, as they are essentially opposite ends of the same scale.

I suggest swapping out for Brazil nut butter, Brazil nuts are a fantastic source of selenium shown to increase testosterone production, you can find out a bit more this in this article here!

    Another awesome article. It was a bit surprising to me because I practice them all. I don’t go to the gym for a week and when I go there I exercise with weekly quota in mind and get heavily tired after 3 hours. This article has been an eye-opener for me.

      Yep, trying to fit a weeks worth working out in to one session is a common mistake that people make. You’d be better off going a couple of times a week and sticking to 45 minutes to and hour. I’m glad you’ve found these articles useful!

    Wow timely article Nate!

    Reading through I was thinking of how to increase my testosterone level and then I realised I failed to follow your all tips except for spring cleaning part (I’m sensitive to dust so I clean often). I totally didn’t know that overworking is a dangerous thing because someone told me that exercising is great for boosting my levels but man, now I need to wait a month maybe two for my testosterone levels to come back up, oh my!

      I’m glad you’ve found this useful!

      With regards to working out to a point where you’re exhausted, chance is that you’re not. You’ll know you’re exhausted if for several days in a row you find yourself with no energy, if you’re just a bit tired, I’d just suggest taking a day or two off and then you’ll be good to go back to the gym! Weightlifting is good for your testosterone production; but I’d keep your workout times, to be about 45 minutes.

    Hi! Your site really deals with things that I had never heard of. So I’m grateful I found it! Over training has a negative effect on our body in the sense it makes us even more vulnerable to injuries. But I didn’t know it affected testosterone production. As it happens in music, notes and rests are important; for gym goers training days and rest days are equally important!

      Precisely you need to make sure your body gets adequate rest to avoid too much stress being put upon it, stress leads to cortisol release ad cortisol inhibits the production of testosterone.

    I am astonished by several of the points that are associated with low testosterone. In particular, I have never tried licorice, but I found counterintuitive the fact that excessive exercise in the gym can be harmful.

    And not to mention the peanut butter is something that seemed so harmless (well, slightly). One has to be alert of everything one does and eats

      Yeah, the problem with excessive exercise is it puts too much stress on the body. Stress leads to the production of cortisol and cortisol inhibits the production of testosterone, I’d advise keeping any workout sessions to no longer than an hour.

    Very interesting article, I must say. I certainly didn’t know half of the things you listed that lowers testosterone. 

    I will definitely start cleaning more frequently, and stay away from peanut butter for that matter. 

    It makes total sense that ones testosterone lowers when they don’t allow their bodies to recover on rest days. I have many friends that over do it and work out 7 times a week. You have to give your body a chance to heal.

      Precisely you do need to give your body time to heal!

      Yep the chemicals in dust are poison to your testosterone and your health as a whole, so be sure to step your cleaning frequency.

  6. Thanks for the tip that sleeping in darkness can help in better sleep, which in turn can help in preventing the lowering of testosterone. My husband and I are planning to have a child soon but his recent checkup revealed that he has low testosterone in his body. Perhaps it would be good if he find a men’s clinic that will help him be more potent in getting me pregnant.

      Yeah the darker your room, the better you will sleep & a good nights sleep is vital for healthy testosterone production, including testosterone.

      Yeah I would suggest you get your husband to try and increase his testosterone levels naturally if that doesn’t work, I would 100% recommend that he looks at TRT options.
