Triclosan

poison

This is a chemical found in the popular toothpaste brand Colgate Total. Triclosan is an antibacterial chemical. This allows the company to promote itself as the “only toothpaste approved by the FDA to help fight plaque and gingivitis.”

Triclosan is in fact shown to help prevent gingivitis; however this comes at a fairly hefty cost! Triclosan has been linked to concerns over antibiotic resistance. It’s also been linked to our old friend, endocrine disruption.

As we have covered above & in other articles. Endocrine disruptors can potentially lead to a number of health issues. This even includes an increased risk of developing some cancers. All of this is on top of an imbalance of wider hormone levels & production. Which includes lowered testosterone production.

Toothpaste due to the mouth being so absorbent seems to be one of the more potent delivery systems for Triclosan. Studies have found that people who brushed their teeth with Colgate Total had over 500% more triclosan in their urine than those who haven’t used Colgate!

Diethanolamine (DEA)

poison

DEA is found in many products that foam, such as your toothpaste. It’s a hormone disruptor & chemical that lowers testosterone production. On top that it can react with other ingredients & potentially form a carcinogen called NDEA. This carcinogen is easily absorbed through the skin & is linked with various cancers including liver, stomach, bladder & esophagus.

Microbeads

microbead toothpaste

These are small plastic pellets found in products like facial scrubs, body washes, obviously toothpaste & others. The issue is this exposes your gums and mouth to plastic. As we’ve covered in other articles, plastics contain chemicals like BPA. These are endocrine disruptors and xenoestrogens.

BPA (Bisphenol- A) Is probably the best known chemical; but it doesn’t end there, there are other chemicals found in plastics that have the same/ a similar effect the body. A product can be BPA free. That doesn’t necessarily mean it is free of all toxic chemicals found in plastics.

We have covered this in other articles; but you may not be familiar with xenoestrogen. The most simple description is that it is a chemical which mimics the hormone estrogen. As I’m sure you know. Estrogen is the opposing hormone of testosterone. Your estrogen levels being increased is not what you want!

Another reason you want to avoid microbeads is environmental ones. They go down your drain and through the filters at most wastewater treatment plants. So they end up in natural waters. The microbeads then absorb toxins from the water.

These end up being eaten by all types of marine wildlife. This ultimately ends up back in humans through eating fish and seafood. So Microplastics don’t just expose you to chemicals that lower testosterone, they also have a negative impact on the environment!

Parabens

Skull

Parabens are used as preservatives in lots of skin care & cosmetic type products. Parabens are a big issue as far as your testosterone levels are concerned. This is on two different fronts. You may be familiar with them already. We will cover them anyway though.

The first issue with parabens is they are a xenoestrogen. Which as we’ve covered imitates the behavior of estrogen in the body. The second issue is that they are an endocrine disruptor. As you know they lead to lowered testosterone production. They can also ruin the balance of your hormones as a whole!

On top of being a chemical that lowers testosterone production. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in the united states has conducted their own research in to parabens. Their findings have linked methyl parabens to developmental, hormonal, metabolic & neurological disorders. They are a threat to your wider health on top of your testosterone production!

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES) Sulfates

Foam

Sodium lauryl sulfate is utilized as an ingredient in thousands of different types of products. This includes cosmetics, industrial cleaners, cosmetic products, body cleaning products. With toothpaste of course being one of them!

This is a chemical that causes toothpaste and other products to “foam”. It can be abbreviated to SLS/ SLES or you may see it listed as sulfate. Either way, keep an eye out for all these on the ingredients list and avoid!

Quite a few people mistakenly assume that SLS is safe/ healthy as it originates from coconuts. This isn’t the case though, the manufacturing process it goes through results in it becoming toxic. Due to this a danger to your endocrine system and as a result your testosterone production.

SLS presents an issue to your endocrine system as it breaks down the moisture barrier on your skin. As a result, dangerous chemicals & substances like those we’ve looked at today. Are able to penetrate the skin far more easily!

SLS is thought to make the skin 100 times more permeable, so it is a big issue! Another big cause of concern with SLS is that when combined with other chemicals it can become a “nitrosamine”. This is an extreme category of carcinogen and is poisonous to the body.

Studies conducted in to the effects of SLS exposure have shown correlations organ toxicity, developmental & reproductive toxicity. It is also linked to eye & skin irritation. I’m sure you can ascertain from the above that SLS combined with the chemicals that lower testosterone. Or any other toxic chemicals are a serious threat to your testosterone production and wider health.
