So There Are Chemicals That Lower Testosterone In My Toothpaste?

Unfortunately There Are, On Top Of These Being Chemicals That Lower Testosterone, The Negative Effect They Have On Your Health Will Likely Shock You! Read On To Find Out More!

The reason these chemicals lead to lowered testosterone is they are endocrine disruptors or make it easier for endocrine disrupting chemicals to be more easily absorbed!

If you’re unsure of what endocrine disruptors are, I suggest you check out this article on Chemicals That Lower Testosterone – Where  Are They Found Toothpaste– It will help you understand what endocrine disruptors are and why they are a danger to your health.

As a quick headline endocrine disruptors negatively affect your bodies hormone production.

They lead to an imbalance in your hormone levels and this includes lowered testosterone production & increased estrogen. This hormone imbalance & lack of testosterone/ too much estrogen can cause a number of health issues. Some of these are extremely serious and some cases potentially fatal!

What We Will Cover In This Article

So in this article we will be covering what the main toxic chemicals are in most toothpastes, the types of toothpastes & types of brands that contain these chemicals that lower testosterone, what the chemicals are that lower testosterone and the other toxic chemicals found in toothpaste.

We will also go over how to check if a brand/ product contains these toxic chemicals and the alternative types of toothpastes that don’t contain chemicals that lower testosterone.

Toxic Chemicals Found In Toothpastes

Not all toxic chemicals in toothpastes lower testosterone but a number of them do, I thought it useful to list all the toxic chemicals that you can find in your standard brand. The ones we’re going to focus on further are Triclosan, Diethanolamine (DEA), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Fluoride & microbeads.

All the above we’re going to look are endocrine disruptors or chemicals that lower testosterone production and we will look at these further. The rest are still bad for your health and I do advise to do a quick google search, you will see just what they do to your body (it’s not pretty!)!

  • Triclosan
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Artificial Sweeteners
  • Fluoride
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Diethanolamine (DEA)
  • Microbeads

So let’s take a look at in further detail the chemicals that lower testosterone found in your tooth paste, why they lower testosterone and what other health risks they potentially pose to you!

Triclosan

The is a chemical found in the popular toothpaste brand Colgate Total. Triclosan is an antibacterial chemical which allows the company to promote itself as the “only toothpaste approved by the FDA to help fight plaque and gingivitis.”

Triclosan is in fact shown to help prevent gingivitis; however this comes at a fairly hefty cost! Triclosan has been linked to concerns over antibiotic resistance & our old friend endocrine disruption.

As we have covered above & in other articles, endocrine disruptors can include a number of health issues including breast, ovarian, prostate & testicular cancer. All this on top of lowered testosterone production & an imbalance of wider hormone levels & production.
Stop Sign

Toothpaste due to the mouth being so absorbent seems to be one of the more potent delivery systems for Triclosan. Studies have found that people who brushed their teeth with Colgate Total had over 500% more triclosan in their urine than those who haven’t used Colgate!

Diethanolamine (DEA)

DEA is found in many products that foam, such as your toothpaste. It’s a hormone disruptor & chemical that lowers testosterone production, on top that it can react with other ingredients & potentially form a carcinogen called NDEA. This carcinogen is easily absorbed through the skin & is linked with various cancers including liver, stomach, bladder & esophagus.

Microbeads

These are small plastic pellets found in products like facial scrubs, body washes, obviously toothpaste & others. The issue is this exposes your gums and mouth to plastic, as we’ve covered in other articles, plastics contain chemicals like BPA which are endocrine disruptors and xenoestrogens.

BPA (Bisphenol- A) Is probably the best known chemical; but it doesn’t end there, there are other chemicals found in plastics that have the same/ a similar effect the body. Just because something is BPA it doesn’t mean it is free of all toxic chemicals found in plastics.

We have covered this in other articles; but you may not be familiar with xenoestrogen. The most simple description is that it is a chemical which mimics the hormone estrogen. As I’m sure you know, estrogen is the opposing hormone of testosterone, your estrogen levels being increased is not what you want!

Another reason you want to avoid microbeads is environmental ones. They go down your drain and through the filters at most wastewater treatment plants.

So they end up in natural waters, the microbeads then absorb toxins from the water and end up being eaten by all types of marine wildlife and this ultimately ends up back in humans through eating fish and seafood.

So Microplastics don’t just expose you to chemicals that lower testosterone, they also have a negative impact on the environment!

Parabens

Parabens are used as preservatives in lots of skin care & cosmetic type products, as we’re covering it in this article, this of course includes some toothpastes. Parabens are a big issue as far as your testosterone levels are concerned on two different fronts that I imagine we may be familiar with by now.

The first issue with parabens is they are a xenoestrogen, which as we’ve covered imitates the behaviour of estrogen in the body. The second issue is that they are an endocrine disruptor, we’ve covered these in the article as well and know they lead to lowered testosterone production & can ruin the balance of your hormones as a whole!

On top of being a chemical that lowers testosterone production, The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in the united states has conducted their own research in to parabens and had findings linking methyl parabens to developmental, hormonal, metabolic & neurological disorders. They are a threat to your wider health on top of your testosterone production!

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES) Sulfates

Sodium lauryl sulfate is utilized as an ingredient in thousands of different types of products including cosmetics, industrial cleaners, cosmetic products and body cleaning products and toothpaste is of course one of these! This is a chemical that causes toothpaste and other products to “foam”. It can be abbreviated to SLS/ SLES or you may see it listed as sulfate. Either way, keep an eye out for all these on the ingredients list and avoid!

Quite a few people mistakenly assume that SLS is safe/ healthy as it originates from coconuts. This isn’t the case though, the manufacturing process it goes through results in it becoming toxic and as such a danger to your endocrine system and as a result your testosterone production. Bottle of Poison

SLS presents an issue to your endocrine system as it breaks down the moisture barrier on your skin. As a result dangerous chemicals & substances like those we’ve looked at today are able to penetrate the skin far more easily! SLS is thought to make the skin 100 times more permeable, so it is a big issue!

Another big cause of concern with SLS is that when combined with other chemicals it can become a “nitrosamine”. This is an extreme category of carcinogen and is a poisonous to the body.

Studies conducted in to the effects of SLS exposure have shown correlations organ toxicity, developmental & reproductive toxicity, it also linked to eye & skin irritation.

I’m sure you can ascertain from the above that SLS combined with the chemicals that lower testosterone listed above or in fact any other toxic chemicals are a serious threat to your testosterone production and wider health.

What Toothpaste Products/ Brands Contain Chemicals That Lower Testosterone?

We’ve already mentioned at least one brand that contains these chemicals that lower testosterone but the broader answer is that the majority of commercial brands contain most if not all the chemicals listed above; and a lot of brands will contain at least some of them!

The easiest way to assess if a toothpaste doesn’t contain these chemicals is to see if they advertise themselves as being free from toxic chemicals or promote themselves as being organic.

You can obviously check this on product packaging, their website/ research online and you can even check the ingredients list to see if there any chemicals that you should be avoiding.

Alternative Product Options

Now one thing I haven’t mentioned as part of this article is mint, while it clearly isn’t a chemical or anything toxic, mint does lower your testosterone production. You can read more about this here in these foods that lower testosterone article.

So as I alluded to above you want to opt for toothpastes that are organic or advertise as being toxic free/ not containing these charcoalchemicals, the other things you want to try & opt for is non mint flavoured toothpaste, I personally recommend a charcoal based toothpaste, as they are effective for teeth whitening as well.

There are a number of different toothpaste brands that I use & have used that won’t lower T. You can check them out in this article below.

I am completely blown away by this post. I was not aware of half of the hazards that I am exposing myself to on a daily basis. It is so shocking to read about how plastic has invaded almost all aspects of our modern lives. I was under the impression that Floride in toothpaste was good for our teeth but your post is highlighting a potential risk to our health.

Will you be writing articles about where and how we can select alternatives to products that contain these harmful chemicals as I am sure there will be a number of people who are also very concerned like I am.

Or the pills that they are taking is controlled and the ones found in other household products are not? I’m still pretty new at this, so would like to get a clearer picture..I read the list of the ingredients found in toothpaste that are bad, but I felt they are almost everywhere right now. Do you have a suggestion of which toothpaste that does not have all these harmful ingredients? Thanks!

    1. Nate Stone says:

      Hi Wina,
