Teflon PTFE

I’m sure that you’ve heard of Teflon before, if not you may know it as “non-stick”. It is one of the most prevalent toxic chemicals you’ll find hiding in your kitchenware as a whole!

In various studies, Teflon has been shown to release at least six different toxic gases when it is heated, a number of which are carcinogenic. In fact one of the chemicals, monofluoroacetic acid, is known for being lethal even when in small dosages. Then there is another called PFIB, this chemical is a relative of the World War 2 nerve gas phosgene, this is what is potentially going in to your food!

Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA)

PFOA is a non-stick chemical used in the manufacture of Teflon. They stopped using it in 2013, so if you have a Teflon frying pan from back then, I suggest you throw it away and you will see why here! PFOA is a chemical that lowers testosterone, as it is an endocrine disruptor. This is a chemical that negatively impacts your thyroid, disrupting healthy hormone production and particularly may alter steroid hormone production, which testosterone falls under.

If you aren’t familiar with endocrine disruptors, these are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system. This is the system that is responsible for hormone production (this includes testosterone & other hormones).

Endocrine disruptors can produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife. PFOA has also been linked with multiple other nasty side effects, this includes neonatal death, the development of tumours and toxic effects on the immune system & liver. Something else to note is, PFOA has a half-life of three years can’t be metabolized by the body. This means that once it enters you body, it is going to be stuck there, for a very long time!

Aluminium

Aluminium is the third most abundant mineral available on Earth. Due to it being so abundant it has been used to manufacture a large amount of cookware, including frying pans at a low cost. The issue is, that Aluminium is a soft, highly reactive metal and can have serious health effects when ingested.

Aluminium is thought to be another endocrine disruptor & is a known neurotoxin which researchers project inhibit over 200 important functions in the body. There have been additional studies conducted in to the effect of excessive aluminium exposure and these have found links to Alzheimer’s disease, dementia & damage to the nervous system.

Copper

Copper is highly susceptible to leaching into food, the likelihood is increased when in contact with acidic foods, (think tomato sauce). While this doesn’t present an issue in smaller amounts, over consumption of Copper is linked to liver damage & the development of ulcers.

Copper Pans

Cadmium

Cadmium is often found in coatings in frying pans & other cookware. This is to give them a uniformed colour and more balanced heating abilities. Cadmium is actually one of the most toxic metals in existence. It is a human carcinogen, negatively impacts reproductive system, which mean lowered testosterone and Cadmium often builds up in the liver & kidneys over time. It can remain in the liver and kidney for several years.

Nickel

Much the same as cadmium, nickel is used in coatings & linings of pans and cooking ware. In some scenarios, it can even be found in stainless steel cookware, so that is something to look out for, if you do opt for a stainless steel option. While Nickel occurs naturally in the environment, excessive exposure is linked lungs and nasal cancers if inhaled, dermatitis and endocrine disruption. On top of it being linked to the above & as one of the chemicals that lower testosterone (due to the endocrine disruption). Nickel has also been shown to cause nausea, vomiting & potentially neurological effects.

The Types Free Of Chemicals That Lower Testosterone You Can Opt For

  1. Ceramic
  2. Cast Iron
  3. Stainless

Thumbs Up

Ceramic

I personally use ceramic frying pans as they don’t contain the metals and chemicals listed above. Brands will advise that their glazes are made with non-toxic materials. This is usually accurate; but a search for the brand online should confirm if you aren’t sure.

Apart from the fact that is free from toxic materials & chemicals that lower testosterone, I like ceramic frying pans, as they cook very evenly and are extremely durable under high heat. I’m going to be publishing an article shortly looking my recommended Ceramic Pans, one of the brands I suggest you check out is Xtrema & Xtrema cookware UK who ship worldwide. Until I do a full review of Xtrema & my other recommended brands, you can also take a look at Amazon, as they have a great range of Ceramic frying Pans which you can also check out below.

Cast iron is another good option for a frying pan that won’t leach toxic chemicals and ones that lower testosterone in to your food. They are durable, long-lasting, and require minimal cleaning. One thing you do need to is “season” the frying pan to create a natural nonstick surface.

You can google more in depth instructions; but in short “seasoning” your cast Iron frying pan involves coating it in coconut or olive oil baking at 350º for an hour. You then need to let it cool and wipe away any excess oil. The same as with ceramic frying pans, I’m going be creating an article reviewing my recommended cast iron Pans, again for the time being, I suggest you check out the range they offer on Amazon, which you can check out below.

Stainless Steel Pans

Stainless steel like ceramic and cast iron, is free from chemicals that lower testosterone & other toxic chemicals (you need to make sure the pan you buy is free of the toxic metals listed in this article). So again, another great option. In my personal experience it doesn’t cook as evenly as the two above; but they are often cheaper and quicker to cook with, so there are pros & cons, when comparing them.

The same as with the other two frying pans I’ve recommended, I’m going to be publishing an article reviewing my recommended stainless steel pans. The same as with the other two, Amazon have a good, broad range of Stainless Steel Pans.

They offer a brilliant range of ceramic pans & cookware with worldwide shipping. They actually have a massive sale on at the moment, which you can take advantage of from below.
